It is quite uncommon for an Italian producer—especially in Tuscany—to devote so much energy to white wine, yet at this family estate (managed by Franco Troiani and his son Mat- teo) they do just that. The Troiani family had been vignerons in the Marche for generations when Franco’s parents moved to Tuscany in 1959 and purchased Fontaleoni estate. They quickly became adherents to Vernaccia di San Gimignano. It is the only Tuscan white wine with an historically important legacy, which dates back to the Middle Ages. When it is at its best, it has a wonderful and lively personal- ity, an ebullience noted in a knowing poetic strain by Michelangelo as a wine that “kisses, bites, stings and caresses,” perfectly capturing its delicate yet sinewy char- acter. This wine was the first in Italy to be awarded the DOC status in 1966, which was then upgraded to DOCG in 1993.
