I always love a wine or winery with a great backstory. Of course, the wine needs to be able to stand alone on its delicious merits, but there’s something incredibly satisfying in knowing who and what is behind the wine you’re about to enjoy. It can add excitement to opening a bottle or complete an already outstanding drinking experience. After I learned about Bodegas Chacon de Buelta’s “Nibias No.4 “, I knew I had to taste it to see if it’s intriguing background matched the wine itself. I’m thrilled to announce that it most certainly did.

Though the Spanish region of Asturias is best known for Sidra, Spanish hard cider, a new vineyard has been gaining followers and local cult-like acclaim. Bodegas Chacon de Buelta was established in 2000 and in the past three years has become the new star of the region. The winery’s two vineyards are located within the two separate villages both within the municipality of Ibias, for which the wine is named. Their organically farmed vineyards have been referred to as an example of “heroic viticulture”, as the vines are terraced and grown on an incredibly steep incline. The grapes must be harvested cautiously by hand as the 30+% gradient slope is impassable by machines. Additionally, the microclimate of Ibias is special. It’s different from the surrounding growing areas - it sees the most sun and reaches the highest temperatures in all of Asturias.

The first vintage release from this young winery was in 2006. Six years later, they really hit their stride. The 2012 vintage received great praise throughout Spain, building anticipation for the 2013 vintage release. Within five months, the vineyard sold the entirety of the 2013 vintage.

This past spring marked the release of the 2014 vintage of the winery’s ‘Nibias No.4’. And while the majority of the wine stayed within Spain, for the first time, the wine was exported to the United States. The 7,000 bottles produced sold in just 15 days and your friends at Suburban were able to get the largest allocation of any retailer or restaurant in the U.S.

Tasting Note: Commonly confused for Albarino, Albarin Blanco is a rare white grape only grown in Northern Spain. It could be likened to Albarino meets Gewurztraminer. The Nibias No.4 is made from 100% Albarin Blanco, fermented in stainless steel and aged on lees for nearly six months. It has the bright acidity and citrus flavors one might expect from Albarino with a luscious, round mouthfeel and aromatic notes of white flowers, poached pears, and honeysuckle. Wines sealed with a screw cap as opposed to a cork, which experts report protects and preserves wine more effectively than does a cork, while also eliminating the possibility of cork taint.
All wines naturally contain some sulfites, however wines that contain less than 10 parts per million sulfites are not required to include "Contains Sulfites" on their labels.
