The World’s First Single Malt from Sweden Is Here!
Think single malts can only be from Scotland? Think again! Being from Norway and a fellow Scandinavian, I was bound to be intrigued by this whisky from the folks in neighboring Sweden. Mackmyra Whisky is indeed a unique product which I was very happy to discover. First of all, in true progressive Scandinavian fashion, it employs a female distiller and secondly it is made with 100% local ingredients from Sweden; from the barley and water, to the peat and small, handmade oak casks. Lastly it is packaged nicely in a liter bottle which makes this perhaps the most unusual single malt whisky out there in the market. Because of U.S. labeling regulations, the bottle will not read “single malt” but is made in the same fashion as single malts from Scotland. Created by eight friends and whisky enthusiasts in the beginning of 1999, who distilled their first whisky at the end of the same year. The distillery was built in 2002 when they went from being a pilot distillery to a small scale producer.
The malt for the smoky recipe is smoked over a blend of peat and juniper twigs, creating a special, distinctly Swedish, smoky flavor. The whisky is not chill filtered, contains no additives and is stored in a combination of first fill bourbon casks and small, manufactured Swedish oak casks. The casks are bound by oak from the island of Visingsö and placed in a mine located 50 meters underground, which produce an intensive maturation process. Cold winters, deep snow and Nordic summer nights when the sun never seems to set are all conditions that develop a fiery spiciness to the Swedish oak, adding up to a new kind of whisky: Swedish whisky.
Mackmyra also now offers consumers the opportunity to track their own personal 30-litre cask from production through maturation to final bottling, at a time of the customer’s own choosing. At present they have several thousand co-owners and/or cask owners.

Wines sealed with a screw cap as opposed to a cork, which experts report protects and preserves wine more effectively than does a cork, while also eliminating the possibility of cork taint.
All wines naturally contain some sulfites, however wines that contain less than 10 parts per million sulfites are not required to include "Contains Sulfites" on their labels.

I rate wines using the 100-points scale. I have used this point system for close to 25 years. I still believe it is the simplest way to rate a wine, with its origins from grade school in the United States. A wine that I rate 90 points or more is outstanding (A), and worth buying. If I rate a wine 95 points or more (A+), it is a must buy.
