Pavillon

Just like in 2009, grapes were harvested between the 23rd of September and the 15th of October. The entire vineyard benefited from excellent weather conditions, yet not all plots seem to have capitalised on this. The Merlot and the Cabernet planted in the most clayey soils reached high alcohol levels, which tended to affect their finesse rather than their balance. We blended them in the third wine, which is both larger in volume (24% of the crop) and better than it has ever been. It is the first time that the Pavillon Rouge, which made up 38% of the crop, accounts for the same proportion as the first wine. This selection reflects the even higher standards we have set for Pavillon Rouge. It is indeed no longer a second wine but rather a different blend of the first one, with truly comparable tannic power. 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot: while these are practically the same proportions as in 2009, the quality is quite possibly superior. Never before has Pavillon Rouge come so close to Château Margaux. (April 2011)

Wine Spectator

Rather dense and muscular, with a broad range of red and black fruits, roasted apple wood and red licorice flavors. Features an iron-packed finish, but with a velvety coating. Tasted non-blind. Score range: 92-95

Score: 95. —James Molesworth, 2011.

Wine Enthusiast

93-95 Velvet tannins, perfumed fruit and great weight. The wine is almost luxurious in its ripe flavors while keeping style, freshness and elegance.

Score: 94. —Roger Voss, June 25, 2011.

Wine Advocate

Actually higher in alcohol than its bigger sister, Chateau Margaux, the 2010 Pavillon Rouge (66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot) hit 14% natural alcohol. Paul Pontallier proclaimed it the best they have ever made, representing only 38% of production. (This wine also undergoes a serious selection.) Plenty of black fruits, violets, forest floor and earth are present in this wonderfully textured, opulent wine, which will provide immediate gratification when it is released in a year. It should drink nicely for up to 15 or more years. Score range: 90-92

Score: 92. —Robert Parker, May 2011.
