Lagavulin Description

There is Single Malt Scotch and then there is ISLAY Single Malt Scotch. If you have had any experience with the style, you know that the majority of whisky distilled on the island of Islay is famous for the smoky characteristics derived from the peat fire that dries the malted barley. Specifically, the distilleries on the southern end of the Island have made a name for themselves with this style; Laphroaig, Ardbeg and todays feature: Lagavullin. Lagavulin can legitimately claim to be one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland - records show that there was illicit distillation taking place on the site as far back as 1742. Lagavulin officially dates back to 1816, when John Jonston and Archibald Campbell constructed two distilleries on the site, although two decades later the Ardmore and Lagavulin distilleries were combined. The Lagavulin distillery on Islay is home to perhaps one of Scotland's most famous whiskies. The peat and iodine of the sea give its renowned flagship 16 y.o. single malt a pungent smoky flavor with tones of sea salt, rich fruits and lapsang souchon (smoked tea) which can divide tasters - many consider it to be amongst the world's smokiest whiskies. Tasting Note: The nose is big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, mature sherry and creamy vanilla. The palate is very thick and rich. It has a massive mouthful of malt and sherry with fruity sweetness, but with wonderful smokiness too. Big, powerful peat and oak. A long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke, vanilla.

Wine Enthusiast: 90-95 Points

Soy sauce, olive brine, peat, honey, oloroso Sherry, brewer's yeast, bread dough, barley malt and cigar smoke in the bouquet. The flavor that magically includes the innate intense peatiness of Islay malts and the masterly employment of oak barrels phase defines "classy Islay." Concludes sweetly, without sacrificing the tangy, astringent peatiness that is inherent. Gorgeous.
